The Four Types of Sentences


Learning to write can be difficult for our little ones and even for us as adults. However, building an excellent foundation is vital to helping our children become strong writers. So let's start with teaching the four types of sentences. Then, we will reinforce these by creating daily writing prompts with fun topics. Daily prompts allow them to express their creativity and have fun with writing.



The Four Types of Sentences

  1. Declarative: It makes a statement and ends in a period.

  2. Interrogative: Asks a question and ends with a question mark.

  3. Imperative: It makes a command and ends with a period.

  4. Exclamatory: It shows a strong feeling and ends with an exclamation point.


Fun Writing Prompts


Here are a few fun writing prompts. Aim to have a minimum of five sentences. After the assignment is complete, review and edit it with the student. It's essential to help them learn how to edit their work. Finally, have them complete the final draft; they can also add illustrations.

  • If you could have a superpower, what would you choose and why?

  • What is your favorite animal, and why?

  • What's your favorite holiday and why?

  • If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

  • Which would you choose if you could be a character from one of your favorite cartoons? And why?
